Fun Gunning
When its comes to guns, this game has a small but satisfying arsenal. Every gun in this game is a blast to use, whether its the standard shotgun or the crazy multi-kill weapons you’ll find, you’re going to have a great time downing baddies. You can also upgrade your gun throughout the game, but they neat thing is that you don’t have to go into a menu to do so. There’s no inventory to manage. You can have three different guns and two different grenades equipped at the same time. If you pick up an upgrade in the game, whichever gun you have equipped will receive that upgrade. If you pick up find a gun lying around that you already have in your collection and you have a full clip of ammo, that gun will be upgraded automatically. This is a really superb way to have on the fly upgrading with you having to manage it. This means that unless you have to go to the bathroom, you’re not going to have any breaks in play.

Score and Leaderboards
As you play, you’ll be scored based on all kinds of criteria. Just like in the old days, you’ll see your score on the screen at all times. Because all of our consoles are connected to the internet now, you can view leaderboards to see where you rank compared to the rest of the world. Its like seeing those 3 digits names at the top of an arcade machines high score list, except now you can send them a message letting them know that you’ve got their number. I wish they had done more to create a sense of competition, like showing you what how you’re ranked based on score right in the game, or allowing you to create replays of some of your best runs, but maybe that can be patched in at a later date.

Lowdown
There isn’t really anything that I can say that I personally dislike about the game. The length, difficulty, and corny story will turn a lot of people off, but the incredible gameplay and thrill of climbing the leaderboards is more than enough to keep this gamer engaged. This is the game I’ve been waiting for. Vanquish has taken my dream of integrating old-school gameplay mentality into a next-gen environment come true. My wife would like to personally thank SEGA for the multitude of hours I will be away from her playing this game. If you’re a hardcore gamer that used to spend hours at the arcade trying to beat someone else’s high score on 1943 or Galaga, or something of that nature, please do yourself a favour and grab Vanquish.

Boxart
+
  • Fast, frantic gameplay
  • Beautiful HD graphics
  • Intuitive and smooth controls
  • Great music and SFX
  • The perfect old school/new school mashup
  • A little short
  • Cheesy dialogue/story may turn some people off
  • A larger focus on the game community (i.e. Recording playthroughs, etc) would have been a nice touch
  • Won’t appeal to casual gamers or those who are interested in engaging, story driven games
