GhostofSparta

Intro
Count em' up because we're up to six as our favourite God from Greek mythology returns to for more god-sized act of vengeance. This is 'God of War: Ghost of Sparta.'

Game
'Ready at Dawn' and 'SCE Santa Monica' get back at creating another 'God of War' adventure for the Playstation Portable. Cited as 25% more game than the highly acclaimed 'Chains of Olympus,' 'God of War: Ghost of Sparta' sees Kratos back in action. Haunted by visions of his mortal past, Kratos explores his origins and does what he does best, kill. As far as the 'God of War' timeline goes, 'Ghost of Sparta' takes place between the first and second games (if you are feeling a little lost.) While revenge seems to be a common thread with the series, we don't mind. Rage away Kratos.

On the shoulders of being Epic!
'Ghost of Sparta' plays similar to 'Chains of Olympus' or any other 'God of War' game, so all 'God of War' fans will know exactly what to expect. This is third-person action at its finest. Controlling Kratos is a breeze as you progress through each level, climb all over elaborate set pieces and rock the quick time events. If you haven't played 'Chains,' you have to know that being on the smaller sized PSP doesn't affect the adventure one bit. 'Ghost of Sparta,' like 'Chains' is still monster-sized. It might not be 'God of War 3' big, but it still sits on the shoulder of being epic.

Tap dance those fingers
The combat in 'Ghost of Sparta' is kept at a quick pace with the camera zooming around the action effortlessly. The controls are equally effortless, although there is enough finger tapping to put a callus on your finger. No action junkie will be bored with the assortment of creatures, massive boss battles and assortment of weapons and magic. Although I am finding the formula of "roll and attack" a little tiring at the core, 'Ghost of Sparta' has enough flash to make you forget the simple mechanics. Nevertheless, what you are expectating is probably right on the money, the only big grip I can add is the shoulder button "waggling" when fighting off a beasts grip. It just doesn't work that well.

Epically Predictable
Continuing to cater to your expectations, 'Ghost of Sparta' includes some minor puzzles sequences that are mixed in with the action. 'Ready at Dawn' is very persistent at not giving the player too much time to rest your fingers. Still it is beneficial to have some diversification, although the whole formula feels a tired. Unfortunately this is also reflected in the boss battles, while in scope are visually phenomenal, most of the encounters lack the soul we found in three 'God of War' console games. Lack of variety could be pinpointed as the weakest point of 'Ghost of Sparta.' As strange as it sounds 'Ghost of Sparta' is too 'God of War-ry.' However when you helped reinvent the action genre, we tend to give Kratos a little leeway.

Lowdown
'God of War: Ghost of Sparta' packs in an extremely satisfying creature killing experience without any loss of that EPIC 'God of War' feel. Following in the footsteps of 'Chains of Olympus,' 'Ghost of Sparta' is a must have for all Playstation Portable owners, even if it's a little predictable.

roundup
+
  • Impeccable production
  • Epic sized tale
  • Great controls, flawless execution
  • Kratos "still" brutally awesome
