... and you though God of War was brutal
Adding a little more flair is the "Splatterkill" that grants Rick the ability to brutally kill his enemies, usually by ripping off limbs or crushing their skill with his bare hands. Similar to a game like 'God of War' you have a little cut-scene that will prompt you to move the analog sticks like the in-game animation to kill your foe. Splatterkilling grants you more blood and aside from looking brutally awesome, it rejuvenates some of your health (which is also blood.) The other mechanic to regain health is the ability to syphon blood from your enemies, which also stuns them. This is powered by "necro" meter that acts like a special powers allowing you to do some strong attacks within the game.

Splatterhouse

Errr damn you checkpoint
Technically Splatterhouse is competent in the audio and visual department. However, there are a few snags that make the game less enjoyable. First would have to be the longer-than-average load times that come up every time your character dies. This isn't too bad of an issue if your playing Splatterhouse on "Coward," the easy mode, but once you jump things up you will die a lot making the amount you will watching loading screens equal the amount of time you're playing the game. It's not that radical, but that's how it feels. Another factor that hurts the overall fun factor is the checkpoint system that seems to be too sluggish on its saving. You will often "feel" like you have passed a checkpoint only to be sent way back 5 or 10 minutes to when you died. This wouldn't be such a big deal, although since we're dealing with a fast-paced beat em' up, things like pushing the player back too far and making them wait to get into the action, hurts the product and makes it needlessly frustrating. Let's not even get into the boss battles.

Someone's been a naughty girl
After you complete the game, or before, Splatterhouse offers a few different modes to extend the longevity of the title. However as you can guess, this isn't a game you'll be playing over-and-over. At the most Splatterhouse warrants to plays. These alternative modes include the three Splatterhouse side-scrollers can be unlocked by completing sections of the main game (level 2, 4, and 8.) and a "survival mode" that is your typical arena battle. While this content is appreciated they won't hold your interest for too long. The only real "collectible" or reason to play Splatterhouse a second time is to search out all of Jen's nudy pics.... yes, nude photos that Jen has ripped at left scattered thorough the mansion (don't ask.) So if a few topples photos of Jen is enough of a motivator, by all means have at it. It's better than nothing, isn't it?

Splatterhouse

Lowdown
Splatterhouse is one of those guilty pleasure games. It's not a deep action experience that immerses you in the world Renaissance Italy, it's not a vast reaching western epic, it's just a dude wearing a mask who kills everything he sees, and that's good enough for me. Splatterhouse definitely could have been worse and for what it tries to accomplish, it succeeds. So if you're up for some of the good ol' ultra violence, then give Splatterhouse a look.
