• GTA: Chinatown Wars | Publisher: Rockstar Games | Developer: Rockstar Leeds
Mature gaming on the Nintendo DS is an interesting concept, and one that was explored in our 2009 'Nintendo DS Game of the Year' winner, GTA: Chinatown Wars. Having the Grand Theft Auto marquee sprawled across the top of a Nintendo DS game might not have translated into the sales they have hoped for, but it sure made a lot of older gamers happy, and in one gesture all the hardcore gamers who own a Nintendo DS where serviced.
GTA: Chinatown Wars is a new hybrid vision from Rockstar Games that combines a style of the old with the gameplay of the new. Without skimping out, Chinatown Wars explored another drugged up tale of violence, and did so with style, innovation, and most importantly, a new sense of fun. Grand Theft Auto fanboys, don't let the DS scare you, Chinatown Wars is 100% Grand Theft Auto, and and our 'Best Nintendo DS Game off the Year'.

• Dead Space: Extraction | Publisher: Electronic Arts | Developer: Visceral Games
Visceral Games retelling of Dead Space on the Wii was a shocker. First off, I didn't expect to be nearly as good as it was, and secondly, I didn't believe the Wii had the power to give me the chills. Well, I was proven wrong with Dead Space: Extraction. Dead Space: Extraction isn't going to be for everyone, but it is the standout Wii title of the year. Sure, we had some other "M" titles that tried to influence the hardcore crowd. However, none came with the same level of production, and fluid gameplay as Extraction. The Wii might not be the best console to own if you're only into hardcore games, but once and a while a little gem will come out that shatters your preconceived notions. Congratulations Visceral, Dead Space: Extraction is our 'Wii Game of the Year'. |
